Sustainability is one of seven focus topics defined as part of our Strategy 2025. The sustainability strategy developed by KKL Luzern is a comprehensive approach that incorporates the areas of environment, society and economy. This approach aims to work from the inside out.
We recognise that ecology and economy are linked. Our sustainability strategy should not come at the expense of our financial performance, but should help to strengthen it in the long term. Our aim is to make the KKL Luzern's sustainability endeavours transparent and attractive for our customers. They should also be able to participate and become a part of it. The KKL Luzern's sustainability goals are part of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Specific measures are defined for each topic.
Certified with Level II - engaged, we are part of the Swisstainable sustainability programme. The programme brings together businesses and organisations from the entire Swiss tourism sector. By participating, we commit to continuous sustainable corporate development, pursue measures in the area of sustainability and thus make a real contribution to Swiss tourism.
The UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein is a business association and the official regional platform of the United Nations Global Compact based in New York. The aim is to promote responsible business practices by encouraging a multi-stakeholder dialogue and providing companies with knowledge, tools and mutual learning to promote corporate responsibility and sustainability.
The KKL Luzern is operated without subsidies. To this end, we work in partnership with our event organisers and customers. When it comes to catering, we attach great importance to using local, seasonal and resource-saving ingredients. By the end of 2024, the standard menu will be vegetarian/vegan with a focus on seasonality, origin and labels. Meat or fish can be optionally booked by customers. We offer water for water (WfW) in our restaurants and event catering. WfW is a non-profit organisation that invests 10% of the sales price in the development of sustainable access to drinking water in Africa. Food waste is minimised as far as possible and was determined in detail for the first time in a data survey in 2023 with United Against Waste. We also work with the AI-based KITRO system to continuously manage food waste and minimise it. A survey of our employees' commuter traffic revealed that the greatest CO2 emissions are caused by cars. This proportion is to be reduced through various measures. These include participation in the Bike to Work and the Luzernmobil Challenge. Supplier journeys are also bundled and kept at a low level. Wherever possible, local suppliers are used.
We measure both the quantity and the impact of our energy consumption and reduce our CO2 emissions through structural measures and our behaviour. The aim is to eliminate the use of natural gas for heating water by 2030. As part of the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a greenhouse gas balance sheet was drawn up covering all emissions from KKL Management AG. These are divided into three categories: Scope 1 includes all emissions that are emitted directly from a site. Scope 2 relates to purchased emissions. Scope 3 refers to all emissions from upstream and downstream supply chains. Some of the Scope 3 emissions were included in the greenhouse gas balance, but recording them is difficult due to a lack of data. By participating in the SBTi, we are committing to reducing our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by at least 42% by 2030. One far-reaching structural measure that has already been implemented is the conversion to LED lights. At present, 80% of the light sources have been converted. The remaining 20% will be replaced from 2024. We have been using ewl Naturstrom since 2024. The feasibility of a photovoltaic system has been examined and we are in contact with the authorities. The use of a thermal machine is also being evaluated in this context. In order to minimise the amount of waste we produce, we are guided by the circular economy.
We are committed to the continuous promotion and development of our employees through a wide range of learning opportunities, individual support and attractive working conditions in a meaningful working environment as part of our personnel development and on-the-job training. We create a working environment that promotes the well-being and safety of our employees. A good work-life balance, positive energy, team spirit and mutual respect are equally important to us. We are committed to an inclusive and diverse community. Sustainability is a key component of our internal and external communication. From 2023, our sustainability measures will be regularly mentioned in the notes to our annual report and various sustainability reports will be prepared from 2024. This area also includes the accessibility of our building. We guarantee access to our events for all people, regardless of their mobility restrictions. We have been a member of the OK:GO initiative since 2024.
We are currently developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy in accordance with the ISO 20121 standard for sustainable event management. We focus on the core topics listed in our annual report in order to define our ecological, social and economic goals and measures. By developing this strategy, we have also achieved Swisstainable Level 3.
