And, of course, the most beautiful Advent and Christmas carols to sing along with.
Leonard Bernstein had requested a sabbatical from his duties as chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic to devote himself to composing and studying the latest compositional trends. During this time, he writes the Chichester Psalms, of all things “the most tonal score I have ever written.” The commissioned composition for choirs of the cathedral in Chichester, England, is based on Old Testament psalm verses that Bernstein compiled himself and set to music in their original Hebrew text. Lucerne Choirs and Lucerne Symphony Orchestra bring this impressive work to the stage of the KKL Lucerne for the first time together. It will be combined with what is probably the most popular Christmas story in literature and music, the “Story of a Nutcracker”. The fantastic events on Christmas night, described by Alexandre Dumas and E. T. A. Hoffmann, appear before the inner eye when the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra plays the characteristic movements of the “Nutcracker Suite”, to which Tchaikovsky himself subsequently adapted his fairy-tale ballet. A concert to listen to and sing along with for all generations.
