Does music sound different in the dark? Naturally, for we are not distracted by any visual stimuli from listening. At the same time, we are completely dependent on our ears and cannot use our eyes to assign the sounds to individual musicians or associate them with particular gestures. This is exactly the right performance situation for the music of American composer Pauline Oliveros, who died in 2016, for her goal was “deep listening”: an intensive, active listening that also includes the sound of the environment. “Listening is not the same as hearing and hearing is not the same as listening,” was Oliveros’s credo. Musicians of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) will present one of her text-based “Sonic Meditations,” conceived as spatial music, and combine it with haunting excursions into sound by Luis Fernando Amaya and José-Luis Hurtado. We can also look forward to a world premiere by the Swiss composer and percussionist Jessie Cox, who was born in Biel and now lives in New York.
