2023 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of composer George Gershwin. Experience an evening of his most famous symphonic works from "An American in Paris" to "Rhapsody in Blue."
George Gershwin was born in New York on September 26, 1898, and received his first music lessons at age 13. Two years later, he dropped out of school to play the piano and, as a "song plugger," to inspire customers to write new songs. But it was in collaboration with his older brother Ira that the two became the dominant songwriting team on Broadway in the 1920s.
From the beginning, Gershwin had the ambition to compose serious music as well. Finally, Paul Whiteman asked him to write a new piece for a special concert of modern music that was to take place on February 12, 1924, at Aeolian Hall in New York: the "Rhapsody in Blue." A new era of American music had begun!
The opera "Porgy And Bess" from 1935 was the most ambitious project of the Gershwin brothers. In 1937 George Gershwin had reached the peak of his career. His symphonic works had entered the standard repertoire of concert halls. But on July 11, 1937, Gershwin suddenly collapsed and died of a brain tumor - not yet 39 years old....
The 80-piece City Light Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kevin Griffiths takes you on a journey through George Gershwin's symphonic oeuvre: In "An American in Paris" Gershwin musically paints the impressions of his own stay in Paris. The "Rhapsody in Blue" successfully combines jazz, blues and concertante symphonic music - with Dejan Lazic as soloist on the piano.
