This is an independent musical exploration - with the most intense creative dedication - of the theme of death in the broadest sense. A key concept for understanding the spiritual background of "Romanticism" is "longing": the longing for love, for beauty, for a holy nature, for a past time and for redemption. In the turn to invisible worlds, to the night, to dreams, to spirits, demons and darkness, a counter-movement to the progressive "disenchantment of the world".
Where there is longing, something has been lost, where there is loss, mourning is not far away. Certainly, the turn to the Requiem text is to be understood in this form of romantic mourning.
can be understood. The consciousness of a disintegrating world, the unity between God, man and nature is destroyed. This art is an attempt to find, in a spiritual way, a
way to find an all-encompassing unity. Thus death becomes the image of the transcendent union of all beings in the light of eternity. The text of the Mass of the Soul
contains many different images and moods, offering the composer endless possibilities to unfold his dramatic, lyrical and tone-painting powers.
A text that particularly appealed to the romantic imagination of the composer.
Franz von Suppé deliberately composed a Christian confessional work rather than a human dirge. An absolute masterpiece, no listener will be able to escape the touching power of this music.
